Over the past few weeks I have been able to use the BodyBugg® and get a feel for what it does and how it works. After seeing it used on the Biggest Looser I figured I would write a review about it incase anyone else is interested. To give a little bit of background on how I got the device (since I will not spend the 400 dollars for the 3 months to use the device) I talked with a local company and am doing a study with some new dietary supplements they are coming out with and they are bundling the BodyBugg with their new supplements. In other words I did not pay for this device but have the chance to use it for free for the next few months.
We will start off with the pros of the BodyBugg:
1.       It counts calories. In the simplest form it calculates the amount of steps you have taken in a day and does some calculations against your weight.
2.       The user interface has some menu ideas that are easy to follow.
3.       There are graphs that show you your daily nutritional intake and where you are at.

And now the con’s:
1.       The price. The cost of the device is 400 dollars for a 3 month subscription and the device. If you want to keep on using the site it is an additional 200 dollars for every 3 months. I don’t know about you but that is really steep for me.
2.       Entering in the food you ate can be difficult, meaning there is no item list view. It is based on queries of what is commonly used. For example, if I had corn with my dinner I do not get the choice of the vegetable until I get passed the first 20 items. I have learned it takes some creative queries on food in order to get what you want. Also the query is a form of AJAX, meaning after so many letters it will bring back a list of items. This has some design flaws in it. If you misspell a word and go back and fix it there is no way to force it to do the query.
3.       Ummmm did I mention the price? 400 dollars for 3 months and then your device is useless.
4.       Error messages are ambiguous. When I got the device I had to register it on the website. In the registration process I got an error message saying unexpected error please try again later or call customer support. So I called customer support which, surprisingly I was only on hold for a few minutes (2 – 3) waiting for someone to answer.  After talking with customer service for over 20 minutes and having them try many different things they finally realized they changed the way things work and I had to fill out a few surveys first before I could register the device. They should not let you register your device until you fill those out or give better error messages.
5.       The device is a glorified pedometer. You can find much cheaper software on the internet that will do the same thing, the only difference is the BodyBugg has a interface that will plug into the computer and show you a graph of the steps you have taken throughout the day and at what times.

After using the device I would not spend the money for this device or will I suggest others to do so. I find it to be a waste of money and could think of better things to do with my money and could write a better interface for the device.

Hi--

Just wanted to clarify the cost of the subscription to the bodybugg web interface. Subscription renewals range from $14.95 per month to $99 per year--not $200 for 3 months.

The subscription is what gives you access to the web interface to track your progress, which is where you see the data collected by the armband and the results of your food logging (including pie charts reflecting your nutrition trends, step counts, minutes of physical activity, your measurements, goals, meal plans, supplement recommendations, etc.).

Thanks!

"The device is a glorified pedometer. "

Do you know how calories are estimated with the bodybugg? Did you actually review any of the research on the bodybugg? The sensors?

I did before I purchased the program. By the way, did I mention I paid for mine? I didn't get it for free like you did!

As for the device being useless without a subscription...do you realize that a cell phone is also useless without a subscription/account with the cellphone provider? The internet is useless without an Internet connection provided by your phone or cable company or any other Internet provider(e.g. AOL, MSN, etc)?

Did I mention I bought my program? If it costs $400 to extend my life out a few more years by making me healthy, it's worth the frickin' money!!

"Just wanted to clarify the cost of the subscription to the bodybugg web interface. Subscription renewals range from $14.95 per month to $99 per year--not $200 for 3 months." I have tried to find the information to back this up but the only thing I can see is a 200 dollar charge. This could be just an initial charge, if you can send clarification on where the pricing is for this that would be great.

As for the other comment wow, I am sorry if you feel upset. I am not use to paying a monthly subscription to use software such as word, excel or windows. I did review the sensors and found that with other software I can do the same thing and jot down what I did and how I worked out. I am not saying the product is useless, I am just saying there are cheaper alternatives where you do not have to pay a monthly subscription.

Hi -

I also own a bodybugg myself, and like "bodybugg user" above, I did the research on their website (here's their link - http://www.bodybugg.com/science_behind_bodybugg.php) before I bought it because of the price tag. It's so much more advanced than a pedometer, which only measures steps. The armband sensors also measure sweat rate, movement, heat flux and skin temperature so that whether I'm lifting weights, riding a bike, or just riding in my car along a bumpy road, the armband will only pick up actual calorie burn activities (unlike a pedometer which won't pick up biking or lifting, and will give me "false steps" in a bumpy car or on an airplane).

I've been paying the $15 a month for my subscription renewal - when your bodybugg program is close to expiring after your initial 3 months, you'll see the options for renewing when you log in to your account. (But if you didn't pay for your program, maybe yours is different.) I did see an option for $99 a year, but I decided to pay for the monthly renewal to keep me motivated.

While I know that bodybugg may not be for everybody (espeically if someone is looking for a quick-fix), I do agree with "bodybugg user" that it would have been nice to see your "cons" list posted after you did a bit more research on this wonderful tool. It's not cheap - but after spending so much money on cheap stuff in the past that I never stuck with, I'm glad I spent the money. Seeing my calorie burn and calorie intake numbers each day has been the ONLY thing that's worked for me so far - it gives me choices and helps me hold myself accountable.

I love my bugg and I'm glad to see it on the Biggest Loser!!!

Thanks for letting me share!

wait, wait wait! i really wanted to buy one, but now im thinking twice. Can anyone tell me if the bodybugg armband just stops working if you dont renew your online thing. LIke, your armband wont tell you how many calories you burn in a day after 3 months unless you renew your online package. ??? because i just need to know how many calories im burning, i can calculate how many im eating on my own.

this product is based on cutting edge technology that will be used in many other area of medical care. Diabetes, cardiac monitor andcare, sleep apena. In addition other comercial uses such as baby temp monitoring via a diaper tape like device. The technology behind this device is so advance it is being explored by the federal gov. and backed by many patents. You can find more at bodymedia.com.

The thing is pricey - or about the same as these rip off doctors charge. I'm using this to prove to my doctor that I burn more calories almost everyday than I take in so why do I stay the same weight? I'm used to wearing the bodybugg after 2 weeks but the software is a pain to enter foods into - unless you eat Arbys everyday. That is the reason in about 6 months I'll flog the BB on ebay.

Just wish you could turn off the damn vibrate and outdated 80's casio watch music. Come on, this is the era of the user interface.

Chellllo: Yes the BodyBugg is useless without the online program. No subscription means you will never be able to use the device to see how many calories you burn.

I must say, the bodybugg itself is pretty accurate. and it's more than a "glorified pedometer". Once you become an expert in estimating calories/nutrition and not having to log food (which is a pain in the rear) its nice to see how much you burn. To bad they lock you in to that subscription. Someone who made that comment about "a cell phone is useless without a subscription"...this isnt a cell phone. The more accurate analogy would be needed a web subscription to use my digital scale. Why would I have to transmit data over the wire to see my weight? Same difference with the bodybugg: Why do I have to transmit data over the wire to get timestamp, calories, and steps?

As I understand it now, with the new display device (an aditional 70+ dollars) you no longer need to keep the we to track (or really see ) your information .. although the web program does display it quite nicely.

The Body bugg seems like a pretty good option if you really want to understand what you burn everyday. $99 a year is not a bad price when figure you could easily spend
$60 on a (fattening) dinner for 2 .
The only problem I can find is the program does not work with Windows vista 64bit. (or Mac's)
As for the cost if you keep looking you can find specials where you get the body bugg for cheaper and sometimes with some extras thrown in

Hi All,
I found this article very poorly written with very little credible information concerning the bodybugg. Seems as though the research was left a bit unfinished here. Here is one that i have read and found is FULL of great information and opinions about the bodybugg.
Hope this helps:
http://opensourcediet.com/22/i-bought-the-bodybugg-intelligent-calorie-management-system/
There were a few articles written by the same gal before and also some follow up articles that you can find there as well.
Furthermore, I purchased my bodybugg for well under $300.00 and that included the bodybugg, 3 months with their online, and 2 sessions with a bodybugg trainer.
After the 3 months free.... a renewal can cost as low as $8.25 a month. If I include the 3 FREE months that are included in the purchase price.... that is $6.60 a month.

That is well worth it to me, especially if it is a tool to help me acheive my health goals.

The body bugg does not work without the monthly subscription. It will stop synching with the wrist monitor when the bugg memory gets full. It requires that you upload the data to their web program, which then clears the memory.

I was deceived by the advertising on this product. It doesn't work by downloading the data to your computer. It would be great if there was desktop software, but then they couldn't charge their monthly fee, and would probably go out of business.

Only buy the wrist monitor if you plan on paying the monthly fee. If you pay the price, the product works great...

Very interesting thread. I wanted say concerning the subscription, that you can indeed use the current version sold by 24hrs without using the site. As long as you have the display you simply take the battery out when your armband memory light is on. Leave the battery out for a minute or two and this wipes any & all data. You then just sync back up and you have up 14 days to view data on your display.

I just bought the bugg off of craigslist. I had already set up an online only account and had the band added. It was the best decision I have ever made. I have worked for years to lose weight. I have, but slowly and painfully. I have never been sure if my efforts were working as efficiently as they could. I have tried every diet and I do mean every diet. I will say, for me, that this is the best. In the 2 weeks that I have been using this I can tell I have lost weight just in from the fit of my clothes. Tracking your food is not a pain if you are commited to lose weight. Any diet you do, that is worth a salt, is going to track your food. You didn't get fat because you made good dining choices and had portion control under control. This is also a teaching tool. You can see an actual portion. You can make a better choice. You set a goal, in writing, which experts state are more likely to occur. Last night I was going to slack, then I downloaded my information and saw how short I was to reaching my deficit between intake and burn. It made me get up. Not because I had to, but because I wanted to. I wanted to fulfill the commitment I had made. For a forever overweight person that is huge. It is taking a step in the right direction to finishing what I started. Losing weight and getting fit. I do not think this is a glorified pedometer...pedometers rarely work. It is my own personal trainer and motivator. It makes me do what I should be doing so I say that it is a great tool.

I have had my bodybugg for almost 5 months. I bought it to help me get rid of my 20+ lbs of leftover babyweight. I was pretty addicted for the first 2 1/2 months and lost about 8 lbs. Not bad, considering I had not lost ONE pound before the bodybugg. I have been a bit disappointed in how slow the website is when I try to log in my food and I often have to manually enter my food because it's not in their database. All in all, I would (and have) recommend the bodybugg to others. It's a fun, informative tool.

I bought the Bodybugg. I lost 40 lbs. It's still a total ripoff. It's like buying an iPod only to find out it requires a subscription to use it. And if you stop paying the subscription, you'll need to pay the reactivation fee. The Bodybugg actually cost $100 per month, because after the 3 month trial subscription, you won't want to pay anymore. After that, the Bodybugg magically transforms itself into a doorstop. I think it reflects what scum Neal Spruce is. He just wants to (BANG BANG BANG BANG!) And (KKKAAAA CHING!) And take your money.

I lost 40 lbs. by counting calories. You don't need a Bodybugg to do that. The Bodybugg is a ripoff because the device is severely overpriced and Apex continues to suck every last dollar out of you with their unnecessary subscription plan. Good luck with your Bodybugg Kevin. You'll quickly realize all you needed to do was read the nutritional information and do the math. Logging your food with pencil and paper is just as effective and far more convenient than wearing the Bodybugg all day and using their shoddy online system to log your intake.

2. The warranty sucks I had the body bugg for 6 mos and the turedn into a 24 hour arm vibrator. There is no option for a warranty people!!! buyer beware. The manufactuer offfers a one year limted warrany but for a 200-300 dollars device. come on!!! Best buy sells the garmin forunner does the same thing as body bugg but offers up to a three years (anything goes wrong bring it back warranty) and it costs about 160.00.

I find as long as you know how to navigate the websites well and know how to use them it will be easier for you to get your information. I don't have a problem counting the calories, but I'm sick of guess how many calories I'm burning with my trainer and in spin class, or on the treadmill. I know the treadmills give you a calorie count by they are just estimates. I would rather know exactly what I'm burning and how I'm doing for the day, especially since I have a trainer. Then it wont feel like a waste of money when I don't loose weight. Thanks for the comments everyone! Good luck Body Bugg users.

Hi, I got a bodybugg from my boyfriend for christmas. He got the bb for $250 from the bodymedia.com website and it gave him a free watch display and 6 months of free subscription. From a business standpoint, it's smart that they ask for a membership- it assures the company will continue to have income after device sale. I'm sure this was not cheap to develop, and the membership probably helps to cut the initial cost of the device down. Companies like Microsoft, Mac, Playstation do this by making you buy software upgrades when they update the operating system. They are a business, and making money is their drive to create a device that is effective and in demand by the consumer. No one loves to pay for things, but you usually find that you get what you pay for $5 pedometer, $250 bodybugg -
$10,000 kia, 35,000BMW you get it...
Also dishing out the $15 bucks per month is enough to remind you that you are doing a program voluntarily and even $15 is a waste if you aren't going to put effort into it. I haven't had the bb long, so I don't know how accurate it is. The calorie burn seems high for me, but seeing numbers helps motivate me to stay on task. I'll post an update after using it longer.

also, bodybugg is a good device for anyone, including my boyfriend who is a 130lb triathlete and needs to know how many calories to replace with high training volume. I already workout 2 hours a day myself and eat healthy, I still want to lose weight, but I can't simply cut calories to the point I can't work out and marathon train. I hope the body bug can help me target that happy medium calorie number to eat/vs burn. Not just for fatties lol.

The device is not worth the price and my device waistband clip broke promptly after subscription renewal (bought it as a component to the armband). The fine print is "no refunds on subscription renewals" so the part that I liked best is broke and I feel stuck ~ Not to mention apex lost a customer because I will make it a point to welcome new folks to the gym - its a new year - and tell them not to buy the bodybugg and why referring them to less expensive devices and tools that do the same thing. And, if they don't listen initially they will learn the hard way - the price will be shock therapy if nothing else and they'll say yep a pricey pedometer is really all it is.

That's a terrible business model. I would consider buying this if it wasn't clear that the device itself and the subscription are designed for the purposes of greed. They'd make more money by selling 5 million body bugs at $100 each than selling 10 thousand at $250 and trying to suck money out from people.

I bought the Body Bugg so I could compare it to my Polar F11 heart rate monitor. I compete regularly in Adventure Races and Ultra Trail Races. I also participate in several spin classes a week. The Body Bugg is great if you are running, walking, etc. I do agree it is just a glorified pedometer though. It is NOT accurate during spin class, not even close. I found this disappointing. If anyone out there has ever particpated in a spin class you know the workout is intense, plus I am a spin instructor as well. My Body Bugg registered that I burned 350 calories and my Polar registered that I burned 660. I have had my Polar for 2 years now and it also measures Vo2. So I will stick to using it while I run or walking around doing errands.

I bought the BodyBugg about a week ago over the internet ( I would rate the Bugg a B) - I need to lose about 30 lbs and my job is primarily sitting in front of a computer - drafting/designing. It only took two days to figure out I need to purchase the watch because I don't want to wait until I get home to download the Bugg (it can be additive), plus after my six month subscription is up I don't feel like being obligated to subscribe to the web site (which I rate C-). I strongly believe that the Bugg should have came with a basic program to download the Calories burned because the unit is worthless without the website (what happens if the company goes bankrupt). As for the Food Journal, I use other web sites (or apps for my iPhone) that are far less time consuming. Would I buy it again, yes, because I purchased it to find out how calories I burn per day and motivate me to get up and burn a few hundred more. - I spent $200 for the Bugg and $99 for the Watch

The bodybugg is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I can't tell you how many times I have tried to lose weight without success. I joined 24 hours fitness gym and received mine for free. I decided to try the bodybugg . I signed it up in August and by December I met my goal.
The best thing is when I reached my goal I did not Yo-Yo back to my original weight.
The bodybugg does take a little time inputting the information in the computer but hell most people are already on the computer.
And there is a long list of information in the system already.
If you are ready to do something for yourself, and are welling to put a little time into your own life then this system is for you.

I recently purchased a body bugg been NOTHING but DISAPPOINTED! Don't waste your money. Luckly I bought mine on ebay and paid half the cost of a new one. The messed up my "coaching" session and called me an hour late after I had been sitting around for an hour. I registered my bugg online and set it up, but I just plugged it in and it had to be registered AGAIN and it erased EVERYTHING for the past four days, so I have no data! Then, I noticed my subscription is set to expire in three months, even though I purchased a 6 month subscription. This has been a total waste of money and I have been so upset by it I have GAINED 3 pounds since I bought it. Total rip off!

After seeing that a monthly subscription is needed for this device, there is no way I would ever buy it. I am not overweight, but thought it would be cool to see calories burned in a day. So I would have to pay them to retrieve the data from my unit?? Doesn't make sense to me.

I purchased the BB and being a week in I am very pleased. It's gotten my fat arse off the couch and motivated me to move. It's not everyone, but so far it's for me. Of course I haven't had any problems so far using it, but it beats me paying $40 bucks a month to weight watchers to use their scale once a week. You want to say money for what? These things are tools and should be treated as such.

As for the folks that have been screwed by the company....I would be ticked too! I hope I will not have any issues, because I really see this as something that is benefitting my health.
